The football Association of Ireland Senior Challenge Cup (FAI Cup) is the most senior cup competition in football in the Republic of Ireland. BY virtue of their many successes and special achievements in the past Shamrock Rovers are frequently referred  to as being the "Cup specialists". Although they held a record 24 titles prior to the 2019 success that was a description that had, as time went by, begun to wear thin.

The controversial departure from Glenmalure Park in 1987 and the turmoil that followed was a major factor in the Hoops failing to challenge for honours for an all-too long period and goes a long way in explaining why there was a thirty-two period from 1987 to 2019 during which the club didnt manage to get their hands on the trophy.

This book tells the complete story of Shamrock Rovers' involvement in the FAI Cup Competition. That's a journey that began 98-years ago when, as members of Leinster League the Ringsend club played their first game in the competition. That resulted in a 6-2 win for Shamrock Rovers against UCD. Between then and the present time there have been  many highs and some lows too experienced. It's a stroy in which there has been no shortage of heroes and villains, ecstasy and heartbreak, nail-biting moments, controversy, comeback, celebrations and every emotion that football can conjure up.

The prolonged period without success in the competition had become almost a weight on everyone at the club. The squad of 2019 have rightfully claimed a special place in the history books for their achievement. Bob Fullam, Paddy Coad,Liam Tuohy et al would no doubt have been looking down rather proudly on the 2019 team that day at the Aviva Stadium.

The author Robert Goggins had written several other books concerning the history of Shamrock Rovers. A club volunteer for thirty-five years, Goggins is currently the editior of Hoops Scene, the club's official match day programme. He also performs a number of other roles as a member of the SRFC Media Team.
